The Marsh cesspool, also known as a cesspit tank, serves as an enclosed and watertight container designed to store untreated household sewage. This system lacks an outlet and depends on road transport to dispose of the raw sewage. There is no involvement of biological treatment in this process.
The standard construction includes a robust shell, making it suitable for installation in various ground conditions. Integral lifting eyes are incorporated to facilitate on-site handling, and a unique 'keying-in' lip assists in anchoring the tank into either granular or concrete surround.
In light of modern environmental regulations, the use of cesspools is either discouraged or prohibited, particularly in Scotland where they are not allowed. Instead, authorities promote or mandate connections to municipal sewage systems or package sewage treatment plants.
