PolyBed: The Packaged Solution for a Soakaway or Drainage Field.

While great advances have been made in wastewater technology, land drainage has remained stubbornly reliant on traditional techniques, which are labour intensive, time consuming and costly.

But that’s all changing.......utilising recycled synthetics packed around sectional tubes, the PolyBed design offers a packaged solution which avoids the drawbacks of using loose quarried aggregates. The resultant benefits are an extremely lightweight system that can be rapidly installed without the need for specialist skills.

PolyBed consists of lengths of perforated plastic pipe, embraced by a synthetic aggregate and then wrapped in a netting of polyethylene.  It comes in 3 metre sections which are easily connected by the use of standard 110mm fittings and junctions, and PolyBed can be protected by an optional preformed collar if desired.

The synthetic aggregate is made from recycled expanded polystyrene, made to ensure the best drainage performance and at the same time keeping its form. Designed to be placed under a geo-textile membrane, PolyBed is delivered ready assembled to the site where your soakaway is required.

So why spend a fortune on shingle, pipes, labour costs and digger fuel? With PolyBed, the installation of your soakaway can be achieved by one person and there’s no need for shingle etc – simply backfill the trench and your soakaway is ready for operation. It won’t block and will work with any kind of septic tank or sewage treatment plant.

Applications:

Treatment Plants and Septic Tanks

PolyBed replaces the perforated pipe work of a ‘herring-bone’ drainage field. PolyBed’s storage and flow characteristics typically achieve 35% more surface area than natural aggregates, resulting in enhanced water treatment capabilities and a reduction in long term clogging.

Effluent Drainage

PolyBed may replace traditional ‘carrier’ drainage from a treatment plant to discharge point.

Seasonal Soakaways

PolyBed is ideal to install as a ‘seasonal soakaway’ flowing from a treatment plant. A seasonal soakaway allows infiltration of treated effluent where ground conditions permit or transfers effluent to an alternative discharge point when ground conditions are unfavourable.

Key Benefits:

• Speed of installation – up to 4 times faster than traditional methods.

• Lightweight - increases handling capability and reduces Health & Safety hazards.

• Single manpower installation – less labour and plant intensive.

• Minimises site waste and disposal costs.

About Soakaways

Every septic tank must have a soakaway – once the solid waste has been treated and has settled in the tank, remaining liquid then flows from the septic tank into the soakaway – sometimes referred to as a drainage field.

There are a number of soakaway designs - some older versions aren't much more that a length of solid clay pipe leading to a pit full of broken bricks, tiles and masonry! More sophisticated soakaways are composed of perforated or slotted pipes, set within shingle or some other granular material and forming a loop around the drainage field area. You can now buy ready made soakaway pipes which are perhaps the best way to ensure optimum efficiency of drainage – see PolyBed products on this site as an example.

Building a soakaway that works well means using proper materials and thinking about the type of ground, size needed and location - it’s also important to ensure that the waste water does not exit the pipe-work too soon, but gets filtered by the complete length of the perforated pipe-work so you avoid polluting nearby watercourses and the subsoil.
